Travel insurance before you leave Ontario

OHIP covers very little of your medical costs outside Canada. A travel plan protects you from large emergency bills and covers trip costs if plans fall apart.

Types of travel coverage

  • Emergency medical: hospital, doctor and emergency transportation costs while travelling
  • Trip cancellation and interruption: prepaid, non-refundable costs if you must cancel or return early for a covered reason
  • Baggage and personal effects
  • Single-trip or multi-trip annual plans for frequent travellers

The medical questionnaire matters

Many plans ask health questions, and coverage for pre-existing conditions often depends on a stability period before departure. An incorrect answer can lead to a denied claim. Take your time with the questionnaire, and ask me when a question is unclear.

Check what you already have

Some credit cards and workplace benefit plans include travel medical coverage with limits on trip length, age or amount. I can help you compare those limits with a stand-alone plan.

Coverage descriptions are general. Your policy wording, limits and exclusions determine what is covered. Availability and premiums vary by insurer and by your circumstances.

Travel Insurance: common questions

Does OHIP cover me outside Canada?

Only to a very limited extent. Costs of emergency care abroad, especially in the United States, can be far higher than what OHIP pays, which is why travel medical insurance is strongly recommended.

What is a stability period?

It is a period before your departure during which a pre-existing medical condition must have had no changes in symptoms, treatment or medication for it to be covered. The length and definition vary by plan.

When should I buy trip cancellation insurance?

Ideally right after you book and pay for your trip, since cancellation coverage generally starts from the purchase date.
