Core coverage for contractors
- Commercial general liability (CGL): third-party injury and property damage from your work, including completed operations. Many contracts require $2 million or more.
- Tools and equipment floater: your tools and equipment on site, in transit and in storage
- Commercial auto: for work vehicles
- Installation floater: materials before they are installed and accepted
- Professional or errors & omissions liability if you provide design or advice
- Pollution liability for trades that handle hazardous materials
Trades I insure
Electricians, plumbers, HVAC technicians, carpenters, drywall and painting contractors, flooring installers, roofers, renovators, handymen and general contractors. Some trades, such as roofing, have fewer insurers, so having a broker shop for you matters more.
WSIB is separate from your insurance policy. Many construction businesses must register with WSIB, and general contractors usually ask for a clearance certificate as well as your insurance certificate.
Certificates of insurance
Need a certificate naming a general contractor or property owner as an additional insured? Tell me who needs it and the requirements, and I’ll handle it with the insurer.
What to have ready
- Your trade and the type of work, residential or commercial
- Annual revenue and payroll, including subcontractor costs
- Value of tools and equipment
- Contract insurance requirements and claims history
Coverage descriptions are general. Your policy wording, limits and exclusions determine what is covered. Availability and premiums vary by insurer and by your circumstances.
