What tenant insurance covers
- Contents: furniture, electronics, clothing and other belongings, including some items away from home
- Personal liability: if you accidentally injure someone or damage property, such as water from your unit leaking into the unit below
- Additional living expenses: hotel and meal costs if your rental becomes unlivable after an insured loss
Need proof for your lease?
Many Ontario landlords ask for proof of tenant insurance before move-in. Tell me your move-in date and the liability limit your landlord requires, and I’ll work to arrange coverage and documents in time.
Students and shared rentals
If you share a rental with roommates, each person usually needs their own policy unless an insurer allows otherwise. Students living away from home may still be covered under a parent’s home policy in some cases. It is worth checking before buying a separate policy.
What to have ready
- Rental address, unit type and move-in date
- Approximate value of your belongings
- Liability amount required by your lease
Coverage descriptions are general. Your policy wording, limits and exclusions determine what is covered. Availability and premiums vary by insurer and by your circumstances.
